Set the tone

The first impression most people will have when entering your home is through the front door, so make sure it’s memorable! Paint the door a color that is a fun, glossy hue like red, orange or yellow, all colors that are associated with joy and warmth. And get rid of that outdated screen door! No point in having a great looking door if it’s covered by a worn out screen or storm door.

Keep it light

Especially for smaller spaces, keeping your walls a light and neutral color will help make the space look larger and more inviting. Try to avoid jarring color changes between rooms; instead, use colors that are on the same paint strip and are lighter or darker than the room before it.

Let the sun shine in

In keeping with the theme of having your rooms be light and open, don’t bog down your windows with heavy or outdated drapes. In some rooms, it actually might be better to have no window treatments at all to let the sun shine in. Also keep in mind that if the room gets a lot of natural light, light colored window treatments are a better way to go, something that won’t fade in the sunlight and have to be replaced often.

Mirror, mirror on the wall

Mirrors can make a space feel brighter and more open because they spread the light around the room. Just make sure they aren’t placed directly across from a window because then the light will be bounced right back out the window instead of around the room as desired.

Layer your lighting

Each room should have three different kinds of lighting. Ambient light is the first, which typically comes from ceiling lights and provides overall lighting for the room. Also included in the room should be task lighting, which is more focused and can be found over a chair perfect for reading or over the prep area of a kitchen. And finally, there should be accent lighting, which is not as functional as the other two but add an artistic and aesthetic touch to the room.
