Ellen donating $20,000 to Detroit school

Detroit Achievement Academy to be featured on "The Ellen Degeneres Show"

DETROIT – Ellen has another big surprise for a Detroit charter school.

On Wednesday's episode of the "The Ellen DeGeneres Show", Detroit Achievement Academy (DAA) founder Kyle Smitley will provide Ellen with an update on how the 2-year-old school is progressing.

Smitley, opened the academy with the hopes of improving the quality of education in the city of Detroit and Ellen noticed. Ellen donated $75,000 to the academy between the years of 2013 and 2014. The donations helped the charter school finance the rest of their school year and allowed them to build a new library, which they named after Ellen.

On Wednesday, Ellen will present the school with a $20,000 check bringing her total amount of donations to $95,000.

The DAA has more than doubled its enrollment over the two years it has been opened and currently ranks in the 99th percentile. Plans were also recently announced for the DAA to build a second school.

You can watch "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" weekdays on Local 4 at 3 p.m.
