Service dogs being trained to help diabetics

25 million Americans suffer from diabetes.

DETROIT – Man's best friend is being trained to help more than 25 million Americans living with diabetes.

A diabetic alert dog is trained to signal when blood sugar levels go down, and then retrieves the diabetic's glucose test kit.

Doctors admit they aren't sure how dogs can detect dropping sugar levels, whether it is by scent or changes in behavior.

The cost of training a dog for diabetes can be as high as $20,000.
