American Heart Association plans two local Heart Walks in May

DETROIT – The American Heart Association will host two local fundraising walks next month.

The Metro Detroit Heart Walk is scheduled this Saturday, May 3, at Ford Field. Gates open at 8 AM and events kick off with a mascot race and kid's fun run at 9 a.m. A 5K run begins at 9:45 a.m. and the opening ceremony for the Heart Walk is scheduled for 10 a.m.

The Washtenaw County Heart Walk is scheduled for Saturday May 10 at Eastern Michigan University's Student Center (900 Oakwood St.). Gates open at 8 a.m. and events kick-off with an 8:30 a.m. opening ceremony. The 5K run begins at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 9:30 a.m.

The family-friendly events will celebrate heart disease and stroke survivors as well as honor those lost from cardiovascular disease. Both events are free to the public, however, individuals and teams are encouraged to register and raise funds in advance.

Heart disease is the No. 1 cause and stroke is the No. 4 cause of death in Americans, according to the AHA. The annual Heart Walk is a nationwide event raising funds for heart disease and stroke research and education.
