New advice for safely using baby gates

A new report says babies are sometimes injuring themselves on gates designed to keep them safe.

Pressure-mounted gates are popular for their ease of use. However, their design means they aren't safe to use on stairs. A child might be able to push through them and take a tumble.

Baby-gate injuries are on the rise, according to a study published Monday in the scholarly journal Academic Pediatrics.

It's important to make sure you're using the right type of gate for the right situation and that the gates are properly installed. For instance, a gate that is physically mounted to walls or bannisters is recommended for the top of staircases.
