Nutrition experts now available inside Kroger stores

Program offers healthy recipes, advice

DEARBORN, Mich. – Trying to make healthier choices at the grocery store?  Looking for some new recipes to try that your kids will like too?

A new program is bringing all that and much more to a Kroger store near you.

It's called LiveWell Wednesdays --  a partnership between Henry Ford Health System and Kroger stores across Michigan.

Every Wednesday, stores will feature a new recipe, complete with a shopping list and a video link demonstrating how to make it.

In four local stores, a registered dietitian will also be on site.

"We're really excited to be able to bring our nutrition experts right to the consumer, and while they're making those decisions about, 'What is it I'm going to have for dinner?'" said Bethany Thayer, a registered dietitian and director of the Henry Ford Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention.

Experts can also answer questions about food trends, food allergies and how to read labels.

"We're really hoping to be able to talk with consumers about what's in a healthy kitchen, what kinds of ingredients should you have on hand," said Thayer.

Customer Rachel Stoney likes the idea.

"I think it will be a great opportunity for all people.  I'm a cancer survivor, so it will be really great for me, I know, and I think it will be nice for the community," said Stoney.  "I shop at Kroger's once a week, so I'll definitely be looking for her on Wednesdays for the special recipes."

Registered dietitians are available every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through September at the following locations:

Commerce Township - 2905 Union Lake Rd.
Dearborn - 15255 Michigan Ave.  (at Greenfield)
Shelby Township - 14945 23 Mile Rd.
Southgate - 13333 Eureka Rd.
