Good Health: Challenges of preventing, treating concussions in school sports

All 50 states have laws designed to help prevent, identify and treat concussions in school sports. Putting the laws into practice has been challenging.

About 2 million children suffer sports-related concussions each year in the United States. A new study highlights some of the barriers schools are running into as they try to reduce those numbers.

If a concussion is not reported and treated properly, it can have lasting effects to an athlete’s brain and body. Researchers are now working on strategies to overcome these barriers.
