DETROIT – What do puppies, hedgehogs and baby goats have to do with your health?
Health experts are betting you'll want to find out.
To raise awareness about prediabetes, the American Diabetes Association, American Medical Association, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Ad Council are joining efforts with a new education campaign that is seriously cute with a serious message.
The three public service announcements feature "Hedgehogs on Vacation," "Baby Goat Disco" and the always popular "Puppies at Play."
The lighthearted PSAs are billed as a "perfect way to spend a minute" and encourage viewers to spend another minute taking a prediabetes risk test.
It's estimated more than one in three American adults have prediabetes -- a serious health condition associated with high blood sugar levels that aren't high enough to be classified as diabetes.
Raising awareness is key because nearly 90 percent of people with prediabetes don't know they have it and aren't aware of the long-term risks to their health. Those risks include developing type 2 diabetes, heart attacks, stroke, blindness and amputation.
In addition to the one-minute risk test, the campaign website DoIHavePrediabetes.org also features information about lifestyle changes that can reduce the risk of prediabetes becoming type 2 diabetes.
