Sports nutrition: Packing the right snacks for student-athletes

DETROIT – School is in session again, and young athletes are back on the field.

Nutrition is an important aspect of a child's performance when they play sports. Registered dietitian Julie Feldman said that parents often struggle with what to pack to get their children through after-school practices and games.

"If your child is always hungry, they're not eating appropriately. If your child is always asking for caffeine, they're not eating appropriately," Feldman said.

She said that kids need two to three servings of fruit a day. Protein is also important.
