How many calories can you burn running, walking?

When trying to lose weight and get into shape, many people turn to walking and running.

Walking and running are great cardiovascular exercises and both are convenient and fairly cheap to begin.

But how many calories can one expect to burn?

According to research by California State University and Runner's World, a person can burn about twice the amount of calories running a mile than walking a mile.

According to researchers -- who studied 15 college males and 15 college females who weighed an average of 156 pounds -- participants burned about 112.5 calories in 10 minutes of running, and 88.9 calories in 18:36 minutes of walking.

Whether or not you should walk or run depends on your current health and level of fitness.
