You NEED bats in your life!

Many people have the wrong idea about bats, and you need them much more than you realize!

"Bats are actually very important all around the world, they pollinate flowers, the disperse rainforest seeds," says Dawn Vezina, an Educational Specialist with The Bat Zone in Pontiac, Michigan.

The Bat Zone gives you an up close look at bats, and they educate people about the benefits of bats.

Not only are bats pollinators, but they help get rid of those pesky bugs swarming your property.

Vezina says, "Bats can eat almost their entire body weight in insects nightly. So, of course it depends on the types of insects they're eating, but they could eat, potentially, up to 3,000 insects in a single night."

So just imagine if you put up a bat house, which can house up to 100 bats, on you property. That's a lot of insects that won't be bothering you any longer.

Another huge benefit for those of you trying to eat more organic foods, is the fact that when those bats are eating all those insects, farmers require less pesticides to combat the insect population trying to consume crops.

Another exaggerated falsehood about bats is that they have rabies. The fact is, less than one-half of one-percent carry rabies. That's less than .5%.

If you would  like to help, you can put up a bat house on your property. Bat houses and easily constructed, or you can buy the per-made.

For more information, visit The Bat Zone in Pontiac. The Bat Zone was previously housed at Cranbrook, but has now found a permanent home in Downtown Pontiac.

And if you'd like a bit more incentive to visit, they also have owls and even a sloth named Molasses.
