Hundreds of boats are about to set sail on the great lakes in a thrilling race that has been going on for over 90 years. Joined by our partners, the 2018 Bell's Beer Bayview Mackinac Race. Dr. Gary Shoemaker, is the race chair, and Tim Branson, is the Skipper of one of the boats called the Sojourner, and the amazing young crew who restored that boat, joined us in the studio to talk about the race.
Shoemaker says they will have 2,000 sailors and 200 boats in 17 classes, 15 starts and two courses that begins Saturday. The race will finish once all participants have finished the race, which could be as late as Tuesday depending on the weather.
The Sojourner crew is made up of the Boy Scouts of America Sea Scouts who also restored the boat, which is a long process. The crew talked about all the hard work and dedication that goes into the race and how excited they are for the experience.
The race is on Saturday, July- 14th. The Sojourner sets sail at 10:50 a.m. For more information visit the website http://www.bycmack.com/
