Mosaic Youth Theatre is takin’ it to the streets in Detroit

You may have a chance to see their performance in your neighborhood

It is a chance to see something in a neighborhood that you would normally see on stage in a theater. A full scale production of a show with singing, dancing, and elaborate costumes, performed in various places throughout Detroit. It’s called “Mwindo” and it’s done by Mosaic Youth Theatre.

“Mwindo” is a coming-of-age story that the director, Asia Mark, says, “Reminds me of our inevitable initiation into adulthood.” The theme of the show encourages people to embrace their community and the human spirit. Mark joined “Live In The D” host Tati Amare in share why Mosaic decided to take this show “on the road”.

Calling it the Courage, Culture, and Community tour, Mark shared that the idea came from the youth in the organization who wanted to reconnect with the community after two years of distance. So, instead of asking people to come to the theater, they decided to perform the show at various locations in various Detroit neighborhoods.

Part of the significance of “Mwindo” is the animals that are brought to life with larger than life costumes created for the production. You can see a grasshopper, hedgehog, and snake all come alive thanks to the performers.
