Have you heard about the hi-tech veggies grown in the D?

Detroit business grows greens indoors

Imagine the greens in the salad you eat for lunch being grown in Detroit. You might not know it, but that can actually happen thanks to an indoor farming operation called Planted Detroit.

“Planted Detroit is a controlled environment agriculture farm on the east side of the city,” said Meg Burritt, the Leader of Business Development for Planted Detroit. She said the company is able to shorten the supply chain by growing greens in Detroit and then serving them to the surrounding area. Burritt explained that greens loose nutrients during transportation, so shortening the supply chain can help to prevent that from happening. Planted Detroit grows a variety of greens, including Romaine, Bok Choy, Lacinato kale, blue Scotch kale, red Russian kale, sorrel, pea shoots, sun shoots, and parsley. The greens are sold by themselves or sold in prepackaged salads.

“The base of any good salad is a good green,” said Kelly Sharpe, Planted Detroit’s Leader of Plant Health and Employee Success. “Be adventurous with your flavors. Herbs are so important,” she added.

If you’re looking to toss together a different salad, Planted Detroit’s Conner Creek Salad features a variety of their greens topped with garbanzo beans, clementine sections, toasted sunflower seeds, green onions, pickled shallots, and quinoa. It’s paired with Honey Citrus vinaigrette. Watch the video above to hear about some of Planted Detroit’s other salads.
