DETROIT - With burgers smothered in cheese, and delicious 5 dollar milkshakes Mia and Vincent would certainly approve of, Royale with Cheese, a new Pulp Fiction themed restaurant in Midtown Detroit, is sure to satisfy your cravings.
Here they are serving up diner favorites, but with their own unique twists.
"You kind of want to run a muck," says Chef and Co-Owner Hass Bazzy. "You want to be different...That is what makes you stand out."
Hass Bazzy comes from a fine dining background and he uses his expertise to come up with new takes on classic items. Some examples include using cheese fondue instead of sliced cheese on his burgers, making his shakes with homemade custard instead of ice cream, and creating unique items like their nacho cheese ravioli which is served on top of tomato fondue with pesto and balsamic vinaigrette drizzled over them.
Their namesake, the Royale with Cheese, is surprisingly not a burger, but instead a house smoked brisket sandwich with honey ancho chile BBQ sauce, southwest corn relish, caramelized onions, avocado, creamy cole salw, royale sauce, and smoked gouda cheese fondue. Hass Bazzy explains that like Vincent Vega says in Pulp Fiction, in parts of the world that use the metric system, people don't call things a "quarter pounder," but instead a "royale," and that this can refer to any type of protein.
Other reference to the movie include their 5 dollar milkshakes which come in a variety of flavors including Hershey pie, Fruity Pebbles, and cookie butter and Nutella. They also have a giant mural in their dining room of the "they call it a royale with cheese" scene featuring Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) in a car. In the future, they plan to add specials that go along with the Pulp Fiction theme.
If you would like to try this one of a kind spot, you can find them at 4163 Cass Ave. in Detroit. They are open from 11am - 9pm Monday-Saturday and 12-7pm on Sunday.
