INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. - A crumpled pile of metal is all that remains of a gray Ford Focus that crashed early Monday morning on I-75, claiming the life of the driver.

Michigan State Police said the driver, a man, appears to have lost control of the sedan just before 6 a.m. on the icy stretch near Clarkston Road in Independence Township. The car slid and was hit by a van.

The Focus' driver, a Clinton Township resident, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are not yet releasing his name.

The roads were so slick in the area that even a fire truck dispatched to the scene was rear-ended by both a pickup truck and a Ford Escort.

Police said they are also investigating a fatal crash at I-94 and Masonic. No other details on that victim were immediately released.

Police are urging drivers to slow down on the roads as more frigid air settles on metro Detroit.
Weather forecast: Brace yourself for more sub-zero temps, light snow
