WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – An 11-year-old girl from West Bloomfield has bagged herself an 8-point buck.
Cassie Myers made the shot Sunday near Gaylord.
"It was taking forever because I was shaking, but after a while I finally pulled the trigger," the young hunter said.
Her dad, Tim, said she overcame her nerves and had perfect aim.
"I was very impressed. She shot it at about 170 yards," he said.
The deer weighed in at 280 pounds.
So what do Cassie's friends think about her buck?
"Some of them think it's kind of gross about the pictures. But others of my friends do hunt," she said.
Cassie's 13-year-old sister, Paige, has already taken two bucks.
Both of the girls credit their skills to the father. Tim says he learned from his father, who is still going strong at 90 years old.
"It means a lot. I have two daughters. It used to be a man thing but now it's father-daughter," Tim said.
The family owns the land where they hunt.
"It's fun, but sometimes my dad says I talk too much," Cassie said.
The family plans to go back out later this fall.
For the first time this year, the DNR has added a Mentored Youth Hunt. It allows children nine and under, with adult supervision, to shoot deer.
