2 children hurt when drunk mother crashes car into tree in Detroit, police say

35-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of drunken driving

DETROIT – Two children were taken to the hospital Wednesday after their mother crashed her car into a tree on Detroit's east side, police said.

Officials said a 35-year-old woman was driving a 2002 Ford Taurus while intoxicated. She was driving north on Chene Street at a high speed when she lost control of the car and ran head-on into a tree, police said.

The crash happened around 8:35 p.m. near Prince Hall Drive and Chene Street.

A 12-year-old girl and an 8-year-old boy were injured. The girl was taken to Children's Hospital in critical condition, and the boy was taken to Children's Hospital in stable condition.

"It appears to be a vehicle accident, and the mom was driving with two kids in the car," said Detroit police Sgt. Thomas Denmark. "Both kids have been sent to Children's Hospital with serious injuries."

The woman was taken into custody and driven to the hospital, police said.
