Detroit police officers hospitalized after being wounded in shootout; suspect killed

DETROIT – Two Detroit police officers were shot Tuesday evening during a shootout with suspects at Linwood and Hooker Street.

One police officer was shot in the head and the other was shot in the leg. Bullet casings littered the street as it appeared many shots were fired.

UPDATE: Local 4's Shawn Ley is reporting that one of the officers has been upgraded from critical to temporary serious condition. The other is expected to be released from the hospital in the next 24 hours.

One suspect was killed in the shooting. Two suspects were taken into custody. Police are not searching for any more suspects.

Both officers were taken to Henry Ford Hospital where one is in stable condition and the other is in temporary serious condition. Police sources tell Local 4 one officer, a sergent, was shot in the leg. He is expected to be released from the hospital as early as Wednesday.

Both men work out of the Detroit Police Department's 10th Precinct. That's where a police chaplain was for the majority of Tuesday night.

Dozens of police officers are at the hospital where an 8:30 p.m. news conference took place.

Interim Detroit police Chief Chester Logan said the officers were investigating a man wanted in a deadly shooting that happened March 28.

"The officers attempted to make a traffic stop in the 37000 block of 25th Street. A vehicle pursuit occurred. The vehicle was finally stopped at Linwood and Hooker where the suspect in the homicide fired shots at the officers, who returned fire," said Logan.

The chief said police would not be providing any other details on the shooting at this time. Mayor Dave Bing stood by his side during the short news conference.

A doctor at the hospital said families did not want details about the officers' injuries released other than their conditions.
