Parents accused in infant's death in court to undergo psychological evaluations

Pair charged with killing their 2-month-old son

WESTLAND, Mich. – The criminal case against a Westland Couple accused of abusing and killing their baby son took a turn Thursday. Just as the preliminary exam was about to get started, a request by the defense lawyers requesting psychological exams put the case on hold.

22-year-old Antonio Brandon waived his court appearance, leaving his girlfriend, 18-year-old Nicole Roberts, to stand up against the charges alone.

The couple, who appeared in court last week, face murder and child abuse charges in the death of their son Kayden.

The baby died of asphyxiation and blunt force trauma to the chest. Investigators say his surviving twin brother also shows sign of severe abuse.

Robert's lawyer says the young mother denies any responsibility for her son's death.

Diana Roberts spoke to Local 4 in her daughter's defense. "I love my daughter with all my heart and I love my grandbabies. Whoever did this - we know who did it - will pay in God's hands."

The case is expected to resume in February.
