Man, woman jump from burning Detroit home before firefighters arrive
DETROIT – A woman whose escape from a burning Detroit home was captured exclusively by Local 4 cameras remains hospitalized in serious condition.
The woman and her husband were both injured after jumping from the second floor of their burning home near Gratiot and Helen Street Tuesday night.
According to a Detroit arson team, 27-year-old Jason Whiteside jumped out of the window first, followed by 19-year-old Kewanna Coleman.
Whiteside suffered only minor ankle injuries. Coleman remained in serious condition Wednesday evening.
Detroit arson Cpt. Patrick McNulty said the flames were intense, and for the two people trapped inside, fear took over.
Detroit police were first to respond to the fire. The Fire Department arrived minutes after couple made the decision to jump, even after people were shouting for them not to.
McNulty said it is important to have a plan in place in order to avoid jumping like the couple did.
