Investigators: Careless smoking to blame for fire

HAZEL PARK, Mich. – Authorities said a fire at an apartment complex in suburban Detroit has left one person dead and three injured.

A 64-year-old Dennis Mixen Sr. was killed when a fire at the Woodward Heights Manor Apartments broke out just before 7 a.m. Thursday.

Firefighters limited the damage to one corner of the building. Nine units burned and four were destroyed in the blaze.

Dozens of families have been displaced. They were taken to the Department of Public Works for coffee and shelter.

One of the injured was taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Authorities said others were treated at the scene.

Several units were closed because of damage.

Investigators believe careless smoking is to blame.
