Anonymous Donor gives $250,000 to Toys for Tots

Generous gift will save Christmas for Michigan children

DETROIT – The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation received a last-minute donation of a quarter million dollars to deliver the magic of the holidays to less fortunate children in Michigan. Born and raised in Michigan, the donor requested the funds be used to purchase and distribute toys to families in Detroit, Flint/Genesee County, Saginaw, Grand Rapids, Bay City and surrounding communities.

Throughout this holiday season, Toys for Tots has experienced record growth in the number of families turning to them for assistance.  To help meet that rising need, this hometown hero has made it a priority to ensure every child in those Michigan communities wakes Christmas morning with toys under their tree.

According to new U.S. Census data, over 16 million U.S. children are living in poverty, up from 13 million just three short years ago.  In Michigan, over 23 percent of children are living below the poverty level. That figure climbs to over 50 percent for children in heavy manufacturing communities like Detroit and Flint.

"The generosity of this individual demonstrates the true meaning of Christmas and the American spirit of caring for our children," said retired Marine General Pete Osman, President and CEO of Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.  "Thanks to his gift, thousands of children in Michigan will experience the magic of the holidays and receive a message of hope for a brighter future.  This is a gift that will last a lifetime for these children."

About Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Program

The Marine Toys for Tots Foundation is a not for profit organization authorized by the U.S. Marine Corps and the Department of Defense to provide fundraising and other necessary support for the annual Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program. Now in its 65th year, Toys for Tots provides joy and a message of hope to less fortunate children through the gift of a new toy or book during the holiday season.  Our gifts offer these children hope, recognition, and a positive memory they will cherish for a lifetime. Many of the books, games, and sports equipment that we provide as gifts make a significant contribution to the educational, social and recreational development of these children.   In 2010, Marines distributed toys to more than 7.2 million children who might not have otherwise experienced the magic of the Christmas holiday season.
