Police: Woman set great grandparents' home on fire

24-year-old Detroit woman fled to Canada after arson

DETROIT – Paris Smith was arrested Thursday morning at the Detroit Windsor tunnel after being on the run for months.

Police said she was hiding in Canada after she tried to kill her grandparents in an elaborate scheme to steal their savings.

Smith, 24, set her great grandparents' Inkster home on fire, leaving them trapped inside.

Police discovered the elderly couple and who were not seriously inured, but their great granddaughter had fled. She was seen by surveillance cameras on shopping sprees using $14,000 of their money.

Smith was being held at the Wayne County Jail on a $500,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court Thursday afternoon.
