Warm winter killing business in metro Detroit

Pond hockey tournament delayed

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. – I visited the Lakeside Fishing Shop in St. Clair Shores Thursday and they are feeling the financial pinch.

Captain Dan Chimelak says, "Sales this year are down 80% from average and ice fishing is about six weeks behind from where it was last year."

The obvious reason is the lack of cold and ice.

Captain Dan's shelves are stock to the gills and nothing is moving.

I also went to Brownie's On The Lake and learned the inaugural Pond Hockey Winter Classic has been delayed. The canals along the nautical mile in St. Clair Shores are open water, not ice. So, Brownie's general manager Nate Ray says the tournament will now be held Feb.10-13.

Some restaurants and businesses in that area are often dormant during the winter. So, local businesses are hoping the Winter Classic will be the shot in the arm they need reminding people how beautiful Lake St. Clair is during the winter.
