MDOT to seek bids for Ambassador Bridge construction

Gateway Project to be completed by MDOT contractor, paid for by bridge owner

DETROIT – The Michigan Department of Transportation plans to seek bids for completion of a $230 million construction project on the U.S. side of the Ambassador Bridge.

The plans come after a judge Thursday ordered the company that controls the international crossing to surrender control of its portion of the project to MDOT.

Wayne County Judge Prentis Edwards also ordered that a $16 million account be set up to fund the work.

Before the ruling, the Detroit International Bridge Co. said it was making progress on its share of the Gateway Project and had pledged to complete the work.

MDOT says it could start awarding contracts next month. The agency says it wants plans to quickly get thousands of trucks off secondary streets.
