State: Michigan jobless rate drops to 8.8 percent

State statistics say Michigan's unemployment rate has dropped for 7 consecutive months

LANSING, Mich. – Michigan's unemployment rate continues its downward trend, dropping to 8.8 percent in February.

The seasonally adjusted rate announced by state officials Wednesday is down 0.2 percentage points to the lowest monthly mark since August 2008.

State statistics say Michigan's unemployment rate has dropped for seven consecutive months. The jobless rate was 9 percent in January.

State officials say total employment rose by 22,000 in February, and unemployed dropped by 8,000.

The total number of nonfarm payroll jobs rose slightly, although there was a drop in manufacturing jobs.

The national unemployment rate was 8.3 percent in February. The gap between the national rate and the state rate has narrowed significantly in recent months.
