Wayne County prosecutor to decide if Harper Woods shooting was in self defense

18-year-old man shoots, kills would-be robber as Harper Woods police officer arrives

HARPER WOODS, Mich. – Imari Jackson, 18, has been released by Harper Woods police while Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy decides whether Jackson's shooting is justifiable self defense.

Jackson was walking in an alley with his pregnant fiancé near Roscommon Street and Kelly Road after midnight on Wednesday when a man walked up behind them with a gun with the intent to rob them, police said.

The girlfriend, who talked with Local 4, wants to remain anonymous because she still lives in the area. She said they had gone to an ATM to get money for something to eat just before the robbery.

A surveillance video shows the robber leave a club and follow the couple before they walk out of camera range.

The woman says he ordered them up against a fence and to empty their pockets. She says when the robber threatened her, her fiancé grabbed the gun.

Then a Harper Woods police officer drove into the alley.

Earlier reports said the robber dropped the gun and ran and the gun was picked up and used in the shooting.

The case went to the prosecutor on Thursday, but it is still under review.
