Sunday church services held in Flat Rock City Hall

Fire destroyed New Hope Lutheran Church

FLAT ROCK, Mich. – Community members gathered at Flat Rock City Hall for church services Sunday morning after a fire destroyed a local church.

The services were held in the City Council chambers. The theme of the service was a new beginning, a new hope, a new fire. The service focused on the wide range of emotions members may have felt, from grief and despair, to anger.

The New Hope Lutheran Church was destroyed by a fire that started Thursday morning.

According to Flat Rock Fire Chief William Vack, the fire started from a cigarette.  Someone discarded a cigarette in an outdoor planter and the fire spread from there. Luckily, no one was inside the church at the time.

The fire remains under investigation.
