Bob Bashara wants to 'set record straight' about PPO filed against him

Grosse Pointe Park man, attorney say they didn't know actions would be perceived as 'stalking'

DETROIT – In a written response filed in Wayne County Circuit Court by his attorney, Bob Bashara said he wants to "set the record straight" regarding the personal protection order that was filed against him from his alleged ex-mistress.

Rachel Gillett filed the PPO against the Grosse Pointe Park man in April.

Gillett's attorney, Doraid Elder, said the two had a relationship but that his client never knew Bashara was married.

Bashara's wife, Jane, was found dead January.

After telling Bashara through his attorney, David Griem, to leave her alone, Gillett said Bashara didn't stop contacting her, in one instance banging on her front door.

"Knocking on someone's door, or even pounding on someone's door, is not an attempt to force access to the premises … It is an indication of someone trying to get someone else's attention," the response reads.

According to documents, Gillett became frightened after Bob left her a crucifix made of palm leaf inside her mailbox. It was something he had given her the last three years of their relationship.

"Respondent acknowledges that he did in fact personally hand-weave a cross form palm fronds that he received at church on Palm Sunday and left it in petitioner's mailbox, as he had in years past. It did not occur to him that the gesture would be perceived as 'stalking," the response reads.

Bashara said he doesn't want to "modify or set aside the PPO." He said it is in the "interests of both parities."

Bashara said he felt it was important to share his side because "silence is too easily misconstrued."

Grosse Pointe Park mother found dead in January

Jane Bashara was found dead in the back of her SUV in a Detroit alley on Jan. 25. She had been reported missing the night before.

Sources say a man named Joe Gentz was forced to kill the Grosse Pointe Park mother under the order of her husband.

Gentz has been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Bob Bashara has not been charged.
