Marijuana smuggled to Taylor with peppers from Mexico

Truck delivers load of produce, marijuana to Taylor's Topline Produce

TAYLOR, Mich. – A downriver wholesale produce company was expecting a truckload of peppers from Mexico.

However, when Topline Produce employees unloaded the big rig on Tuesday, they found a big supply of marijuana.

The delivery was made by a trucking company based in New Jersey. The driver was questioned and released while the investigation continues.

The pot is in Taylor police custody. It was in three bales and weighs 150 pounds.

A manger at the produce store declined comment.

Federal investigators say there is a regular pipeline of pot to Metro Detroit from Mexico but a smuggling operation with fresh produce is rare.

A spokesman with Immigration and Customs Enforcement also is on the case.
