Ex-medical center leader Mike Duggan to run for Detroit mayor

Duggan to make announcement Tuesday evening

DETROIT – Mike Duggan says Detroit needs strong leadership and he's getting set to announce that he should be the next leader for the city.

Duggan is set to announce his candidacy for mayor Tuesday evening at the Samaritan Center in Detroit.

He is a former prosecutor, former Wayne County deputy executive, and he hailed as the Detroit Medical Center CEO that saved it from bankruptcy.

Duggan says he's running regardless of whether Detroit gets a state-appointed emergency manager.

Republican Gov. Rick Snyder is considering whether to appoint one. Last week, a state-appointed review team found Detroit was in a financial emergency.

Several others have announced plans to run or are looking at a run. Democratic Mayor Dave Bing was elected in 2009 to a 4-year-term and could seek re-election.
