Neighborhood crime alert: Car break-ins on the rise when temperature rise

Police warning drivers to remove valuables from vehicles

DEARBORN, Mich. – You may be enjoying the warmer temperatures and so are the car crooks. Summer has many of us being a little bit too careless and police are putting out a warning. Several cities have seen a recent spike in car break-ins, especially during the last few weeks.

When the summer temperatures warm up, when things get nice out, unfortunately, the thieves also make their way outside. Police call the crime spree car surfing. You can turn down any street in Dearborn and find cars lined up on the street or parked in the driveway.  "I don't have a garage, but I will be aware from this point moving forward."  Police warn warmer temps have turned your car into a target for thieves.  They're asking you to clean your car of anything of value, even quarters, pennies.

Car break-ins have been reported in Clinton Township and Sterling Heights over the past couple of weeks. In Dearborn there were 20 auto break-ins just last week. Five break-ins happened in Troy. Police say the thieves are mainly teenagers, but they're after whatever they can get, laptops, cell phones, and they'll go car to car until they get it. They're after what's on the outside, looking for rims and catalytic converters. GMC Yukons and Cadillac Escalades have been targeted.

Police say to protect yourself, make sure you take your valuables out of the car or lock them in the trunk.
