Kilpatrick claims case is too complex for just one attorney

DETROIT – Kwame Kilpatrick filed a request Monday asking that Margaret Sind Raben be appointed a his second counsel.

In May Kilpatrick's prior counsel, James Thomas, withdrew from the case and Harold Gurewitz was appointed to help in future court proceedings. Gurewitz will handle all of Kilpatrick's pre-sentencing legal matters.

In Kilpatrick's request, he said the Court indicated a willingness to appoint a second counsel due to the complexity of the case.

The request goes on to say:

This Court is obviously well familiar with the complexity of this case. For purposes of trial, Mr. Kilpatrick was represented by more than two attorneys. Based upon that history, it is reasonably expected that the matters that are to take place before this Court for which the undersigned will have responsibility will also include review of voluminous and detailed matters. There will be the additional task for Mr. Kilpatrick's new counsel at this point after trial to become sufficiently cognizant of the history of this case.

Kilpatrick was found guilty of racketeering, extortion, tax evasion and wire fraud in March.
