Manufacturing jobs make comeback in Macomb County
Employers says void exists for qualified workers
MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – It was jobs on parade Friday in Macomb County as manufacturing jobs mark a comeback in Macomb County.
Macomb County is home to 1,600 manufactures and with the economy inching its way back up there are chairs that need to be filled with employees.
The good news is those high tech jobs pay what's commonly known as a man's wage or a wage in which you can own a home, raise a family and live a good life on.
The bad news: Michigan has been hemorrhaging talent as young people leave the state to find opportunities elsewhere.
Now there's a void for qualified workers, like at Ideal Technology where they designing the stuff that makes stuff.
"I'm hoping by the end of the year that I'll be looking for a couple of additional C and C machinist," said Chris Krystek with Ideal Technology. "Over the last 5 to 8 years we have had an exodus of people from Michigan and we need to get some new people back here in Michigan to do this."
The same goes for PTI Engineered Plastics; they are having trouble finding qualified people.
"It's difficult today since the recession we lost a lot of people, people moved away and took on different careers," said Mark Rathbone with PTI Engineered Plastics.
Those gizmos and gadgets you see in hospitals, they're making them at PTI and they're expanding too.
"We always have job openings," said Rathbone.
"It's not the manufacturing facilities of our grandfathers or our yesteryears, it's incredible what they have here and the high tech capabilities that they're looking to recruit talent," said Hackel.
