Heidelberg project house catches fire

Vacant home in Detroit art project burns down

DETROIT – A vacant home belonging to the Heidelberg project in Detroit burned down overnight Friday.

The same home caught fire previously. The Obstruction of Justice house, one of the longest standing works of art by Detroit artist Tyree Guyton, was destroyed May 3 in a suspected arson fire.

The house was created in 1995 in protest to the 1991 demolition of the two-block outdoor art scene that was ordered by then Mayor Coleman Young.

The organization previously raised funds to excavate the site, remove debris, secure the structure and make safety upgrades.
