Son charged with murder, arson for Detroit house fire that killed 2 family members

Byron Miles accused of setting fire to house on Spencer Street last Friday


DETROIT – An 18-year-old Detroit man has been charged with murder and arson for allegedly starting the house fire that claimed the lives of his mother and younger brother.

The fire broke out early last Friday morning on Spencer Street, killing Melinda Miles and her 16-year-old son.

Investigators said there was an accelerant in the living room of the home and a gas can.

Miles' 18-year-old son, Byron, was found standing outside the home when firefighters arrived. He was initially taken taken into custody for questioning, but now faces charges of felony murder, arson and burning a dwelling.

Byron Miles is due in court Nov. 15.
