Eastern Michigan University student shot in off-campus apartment
Destinee Leapheart expected to be OK after being hit by single bullet
YPSILANTI, Mich. – An Eastern Michigan University student was shot Tuesday morning while she was in her off-campus apartment.
Destinee Leapheart, 20, was sleeping when she was shot in her left arm by a single bullet that came through a wall just before 2 a.m. at the Peninsular Place apartments.
Local 4 spoke with Leapheart's roommate, Tammy Flowers, who said Leapheart is expected to be OK.
"She told me she thought it was just her shoulder that popped. Then, a few seconds later, she felt a bunch of pain and just grabbed her arm and noticed there was a lot of blood," Flowers said.
Flowers said Leapheart, who is from Farmington Hills, doesn't plan on returning to the apartment because she doesn't feel safe.
In a statement, EMU police said the shot appears to have been "discharged randomly up into the air from a location outside of the apartment complex."
Police said they don't have a description of the gunman.
Peninsular Place apartments is the same complex where Julia Niswender was found dead last December in a bathtub. Her death has been ruled a homicide and police are still looking for suspects.
Leapheart's shooting comes just two months after 20-year-old EMU football player Demarius Reed was shot to death in his Ypsilanti apartment.
Two Detroit men now face murder charges in his death.
