Defenders: Police stepping up patrols following teen sexual assault

DETROIT – Detroit police are stepping up patrols after a disturbing attack on city's east side.

A young woman is sexually assaulted in board daylight Tuesday afternoon.

The attack happened while she was walking near crusade street and fairmount drive.

The 18-year-old says a man came up behind her, grabbed her arm, and dragged her inside a vacant home.

He forced her to drink alcohol and then sexually assaulted her.

Thankfully, she was able to get away.

But women in the neigborhood tell Local 4 Defenders they are scared to walk alone.

Kaniah Matthws says she now walks with her mom, aware of the recent attack and concerned about her own safety.

"Normally I always got a phone, my mother, or my brothers and I make it fast.

She also adds something needs to be done.

"They need to do something, they need more police officers and street light, and people need to be aware of what's going on."

The victim describes her attacker as a black man in is 60s, 5'6, and 130 punds.
