Mitch Albom hoping to raise half million with radiothon

Local 4, ClickOnDetroit.com team up with WJR to broadcast all day event

DETROIT – Award winning journalist and author Mitch Albom is hoping metro Detroiters will open their hearts and wallets to help support six charities that help people in our community.

Local 4 and ClickOnDetroit.com is teaming up with  News/Talk WJR 760 AM for the second annual S.A.Y. Detroit Radiothon is from 6 a.m. until 8 p.m. at the Somerset Collection, North Center Atrium Thursday.

Albom says the money raised during the radiothon will help six different charities. The event raised $420,000 last year.
"We're hoping we can clear a half million tomorrow, that would really fund these six charities for the course of the year," said Albom. "S.A.Y. Detroit is now a series of six charities dealing with everything from homelessness, to homes for the working poor, to scholarships for students who want to study, to daycare for people who need it taken care of to veterans to senior citizens."
S.A.Y. stands for Super All Year. 

Among the charities that will benefit from the radiothon are SAY Detroit Family Health Clinic, Working Homes Working Families, 100 Houses, Time to Help, A Hole in the Roof Foundation, Detroit Dream Scholars.

Working Homes, Working Families restores homes and helps place families in need of  a place to stay.  During the radiothon, three families who need a home are going to get surprised with one just in time for the holidays.

Albom says families who can pay the utilities and the taxes on the homes for two years, then have the home completely given to them.

During the S.A.Y. Detroit Radiothon several celebrity guests will help encourage donations.   Among them are Hugh Jackman, Tony Bennett, Rick Springfield, Donny Osmond, and Matthew Stafford.

Local 4's Carmen Harlan, Devin Scillian and Bernie Smilovitz will also be joining Mitch Albom during the radiothon.
