Harper Woods police step up patrols around school after homeowner opens fire on intruder

As precaution, police will have 'heavy presence' around Poupard Elementary

HARPER WOODS, Mich. – Harper Woods police are stepping up patrols Friday morning around an elementary school after a homeowner in the area opened fire on an intruder in his basement.

In a statement, police said the homeowner had just returned to his home on Van Antwerp Street, which is across from Poupard Elementary, at 5:30 a.m. when he confronted the intruder.

Police said the homeowner fired a handgun at the intruder, but they couldn't confirm whether the intruder had been hit.

The intruder, a black man in a green hooded sweatshirt, took off.

Police said they immediately began searching the area with a K-9.

Police haven't released any other descriptions of the intruder.

Classes at the elementary school will still be held.

As a precaution, police said they will maintain a "heavy presence" in the area for the remainder of the morning.
