Hamtramck police: Duo slams van into SOS branch, try to take off with ATM

Would-be thieves leave behind damage, stolen van

HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – Hamtramck police are looking for two men who tried to steal an ATM from a Secretary of State branch.

Police said the two men crashed a stolen minivan around 3:45 a.m. Thursday right into the lobby of the branch on Joseph Campau Street.

Security cameras showed that after attempts to back the van into the main doors didn't work, the men turned the van around and plowed into the building.

After numerous failed attempts to get the ATM, police believe a third person may have alerted the would-be thieves that "time was up."

The men left the smashed up ATM and the stolen van and ran away on foot.

Police said the incident caused thousands of dollars in damage and have released photos of the men taken from the security footage.

Anyone with information on the men in the pictures is asked to call Hamtramck police at 313-876-7826 or Crime Stoppers at 800-SPEAKUP.
