DETROIT – An attorney for former Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is asking the court for more money as he plans to appeal convictions on public corruption charges.
Kilpatrick was sentenced last year to 28 years in prison after being convicted of multiple corruption charges including racketeering and bribery. A judge revealed last week that the trial cost taxpayers more than $1 million.

Now, attorney Harold Gurewitz is asking for another $24,000 (300 hours billed at $80 an hour) to help Kilpatrick review trial transcripts and prepare appeal briefs. Gurewitz says the time is needed to review about 11,931 pages of trial transcripts, about 713 non-trial transcripts and about 1,200 exhibits.

Kilpatrick and his father, Bernard Kilpatrick, both were represented by court-appointed attorneys during the corruption trial after telling the court they could not afford to hire their own.
