Driver killed in I-275 crash identified as Detroit man

LIVONIA, Mich. – The man killed in a crash on I-275 in Livonia Thursday has been identified as Jamel Banks, a 32-year-old Detroit man. Police say alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the incident.

The crash happened just after 3 a.m. in the northbound lanes at 8 Mile Road.

Police say a silver Ford Fusion hit a Chrysler LeBaron that was parked on the left shoulder. The impact of the crash caused the LeBaron to catch fire, killing Banks

The 27-year-old driver in the Fusion was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said it appears the driver of the Fusion may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

Northbound I-275 at 8 Mile Road reopened at 8:15 a.m.
