Grosse Pointe Park man charged with first-degree murder in wife's 2012 death

DETROIT – A jury has been seated in the murder trial against Bob Bashara, the Grosse Pointe Park man charged with first-degree murder for allegedly arranging the death of his wife, Jane Bashara.

The jury, including alternates, consists of 13 men and 5 women. Opening statements are expected to begin Tuesday morning. ClickOnDetroit.com will livestream the opening statements.

Jury selection got underway Tuesday morning. Seating the right jury in this case is key.

"You need a fair and impartial jury," said legal expert Todd Flood. "You're really going to have to have the juror voir dired, each individual one, to set aside their biases and prejudices because they've already come into the courtroom knowing quite a bit about this case."

Jane Bashara was found strangled in 2012. A handyman, Joe Gentz, is in prison for second-degree murder after saying he killed her on Bob Bashara's orders.

The 56-year-old Bashara is in prison for trying to have the handyman killed. He's eligible for parole in 2019.
