Man gets life in prison for Dearborn Family Dollar murders

DETROIT – As the families of Brenna Machus and Joseph Orlando try to rebuild their lives they can't stop thinking about what they'll miss in the future with these two no longer here.

"The things that happened, everything that's been taken, I can list, but it would do no good," said Kenneth Machus.

"He was a gorgeous baby with the thickest head of black hair you ever saw. He was such a sweet and funny little boy that grew up into a handsome, caring and fun-loving young man," said Shanna Miller, a family member of Orlando's.

Lavere Bryant gunned down Machus and Orlando inside a Dearborn Family Dollar store where they worked in July 2013. Bryant had let go from Family Dollar.

He listened Thursday as their loved ones expressed the pain he caused to so many.

Bryant says he is innocent.

The judge sentenced Bryant to life without parole. He is headed to prison but he plans to appeal the conviction.
