DETROIT – Today we lost a legend in Detroit who was also a friend. I worked with Bill Bonds for nine years at WXYZ. He was the best newsman I ever worked with.
Never satisfied with "reading" the news, Bill always made the effort to understand the news, and how it affected people in the city he loved.
In the newsroom, he had a sharp mind and a sharp tongue, quick with a joke or a cutting rebuke if he felt you gave it less than your best.
I remember the night he challenged mayor Coleman Young to a fistfight during a live interview on the 5 p.m. news. That was Bill. He brought passion to everything he did, and expected the same of everyone he worked with.
We'll miss you, Billy.
