Metro Detroiters brave cold for weekend events

Polar plunge, Winter Antics, Cupid's Undie Run take place over weekend

DETROIT – This weekend is expected to be the coldest weekend yet this season, and any extended amount of time outside can be dangerous.

But there are plans Saturday for a polar plunge in the Detroit River, Winter Antics, Cupid's Undie Run and other metro Detroit events. The water is actually going to be warmer than the air temperature.

Cupid's Undie Run will feature runners out in their underwear raising money for charity, but none of them, nor many of the people out Friday night, were letting the cold stand in their way.

It was another frigid night in the D, but what's a little numbness in the extremities when there were fish to be caught?

"Most people want to stay at home. We want to get out and not get that cabin fever," said Billy Prevo, who was enjoying some ice fishing.

"We got the shanty and we turned the heat up. It works," said Eric Dorr, who was also ice fishing.

It was picturesque Friday night at Campus Martius, and the kids from Walled Lake Central's Language Club weren't going to be denied a little ice time.

"It's a really pretty night. We got a lot of pictures," a girl said.

But is it too cold?

"No, no. Can't stay stuck up in the house all the time," said Leon Davenport. "Got to get out and enjoy it."

But Saturday morning is a different story. On the Riverfront, the Winter Antics and a polar plunge will take place, all while wind chills plunge below zero.

"We're going to be careful with everyone and like I said we're gonna have bonfires, so plenty of opportunities to keep people warm and keep people moving in the winter, which is really important," said Michele Marine, of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy.

And what about the runners sprinting a mile in little clothing?

"Not a lot. Bra and panties. Some wings. Maybe some high socks," said Amanda House, who is running in Cupid's Undie Run.

"It's very cold. I'm shocked," said Heather Centella, who is also running. "I didn't think it was going to be this bad. I was hoping for 20s, 30s. Not this."

The polar plunge is expected to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday. Winter Antics, which includes sledding for the kids and other fun events, takes place from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Milliken State Park.

Cupid's Undie Run starts at 2 p.m. at the Fillmore downtown. All the while with lots of precautions to keep everyone warm.
