Warming centers opened around Wayne County

Centers fill up quickly as extreme cold enters southeast Michigan

DETROIT – With sub-zero temperatures approaching southeastern Michigan this weekend, several warming centers have opened in Wayne County.

On a freezing night like Saturday night, consider this: There are roughly 20,000 homeless people in Detroit. Shelters can take care of about half of them.

That leaves 10,000 people on the street and there are only three warming centers, including Cass Community Church, open overnight.

Since November on any given night, the warming center at Cass Community Church has been at capacity. Fifty beds are quickly taken by the young and old alike.

It takes just a few minutes outside for the bone-chilling temperatures to set in. A mother and her son decided Mother Nature wouldn't get in the way of their dinner plans Saturday and bundled up for a short walk.

In Detroit, there are about 300 overnight beds available at warming centers. Rev. Faith Fowler told Local 4 news she sees 30 to 35 kids at the church every night. Some of the children come right after school, and more and more come with their fathers.

A fundraising effort recently collected 3,000 shoes and boots for those in need.
