86-year-old Detroit homeowner, grandson restrain home invader

DETROIT – An 86-year-old Detroit homeowner and his grandson restrained a man who broke into their home Saturday night, police say.

Samuel Washington's home is a duplex on Joseph Campau Avenue on the city's east side. Not many homes are left on the block, so the man broke into the back door of Washington's home.

The intruder was upstairs in an empty portion of the home when Washington's grandson heard it.

"He's the one who went up there," said Washington.

His grandson used the butt end of a shotgun to hit the intruder in the head, police said. He held him until police arrived at the home.

Police say the intruder suffered minor injuries and is in custody.
